Why BOM verification deserves more attention

In PCB development, the bill of materials is not just an administrative file. It is a technical control point that influences sourcing, assembly accuracy, manufacturability, and the quality of the final digital twin.

When AVL data, library parts, and CAD information drift out of sync, the impact is immediate: wrong parts, placement issues, supplier confusion, and avoidable rework. That is exactly where BOM Expert in PCB-Investigator adds value.

From import to verified component data

BOM Expert is designed to prepare and verify the bill of materials for PCB assemblies. It supports AVL imports from Excel, CSV, TXT, and XML, and it can use either the default importer or a custom import script for more specific workflows.

Once imported, the plugin matches part numbers against a specified parts library such as the EasyLogix Part Library. Because the library is continually updated, engineering teams can work with current and relevant component data instead of maintaining checks manually.

Accurate BOM data is not a paperwork task. It is part of engineering quality.

Geometry checks that catch real-world issues

One of the strongest advantages is the graphical overlay of real component geometries onto the CAD parts. This makes angle and position corrections visible and helps detect mismatched parts through automatic pin analysis. The result is a more reliable verification process before the design moves further downstream.

If multiple alternative parts are listed in the AVL, BOM Expert also supports the selection of a preferred option, for example from the preferred supplier. Properties and attributes can then be checked to confirm that the selected component meets the technical requirements.

  • Import AVL data in common engineering formats
  • Match parts against an up-to-date component library
  • Overlay real geometries directly on CAD parts
  • Detect pin and placement mismatches early
  • Select and validate alternative parts efficiently
  • Enrich the PCB digital twin with accurate metadata and 3D models

By supplementing CAD data with library properties and, where available, 3D step models, BOM Expert helps create a more realistic PCB representation for simulation, analysis, and machine export. If you want a more controlled BOM workflow, take a look at BOM Expert inside PCB-Investigator.
